Overview
Longitudinal field studies can provide a more realistic view of human movement than single-session laboratory measurements. By enabling remote, repeated, and in-the-field movement capture, BEYOND reduces the time burden of data collection for researchers and makes longer monitoring periods more feasible.
However, field studies also introduce new methodological challenges. Data may be collected across different days, locations, lighting conditions, surfaces, shoes, and user behaviours. To keep multi-session BEYOND data consistent and publication-ready, researchers should define clear field protocols before data collection starts.
1. Guidelines for Participants
Participants should receive simple, repeatable instructions that can be followed without researcher supervision.
- Exercise amount and session structure — Define the expected activity range before the study starts: target duration, minimum valid recording time, preferred speed range, and whether participants follow a fixed route or move freely.
- Sensor status check before use — Before each session, check that both sensors are charged, synchronized, correctly attached, and showing the expected LED status.
- Consistent preparation — Use the same warm-up, footwear, and activity instructions across sessions where possible. Document basic conditions of each session.
- Participant notes — Ask participants to note unusual fatigue, discomfort, route changes, weather, surface type, lighting, sensor movement, or anything that felt abnormal.
- Reporting issues — Sensor detachment, abnormal heat, impact, water exposure, failed recording, upload problems, or unexpected LED patterns should be reported immediately.
2. Suggestions for Researchers
Longitudinal field studies require active data quality monitoring during the collection period, not only after the study is complete.
- Define the protocol before data collection — Specify minimum recording duration, valid activity types, footwear requirements, session frequency, allowed time-of-day windows, and re-recording criteria.
- Monitor uploaded data frequently — Check remotely uploaded data regularly, especially during the first sessions, to catch participant misunderstanding, attachment issues, or upload failures early.
- Run early quality checks — Perform early analysis on the first recordings to confirm data quality is sufficient before large amounts of data are collected.
- Standardize metadata collection — Record participant ID, sensor serial numbers, footwear model, activity type, session time, surface, lighting, temperature, route, and subjective load or wellness scores.
- Plan missing-data handling in advance — Define how missing, corrupted, or incomplete trials will be handled. Pre-register the strategy where appropriate.
3. Sensor Usage and Data Consistency
Good sensor management is essential for longitudinal comparability.
- Keep sensor assignment stable — Assign the same sensor pair to the same participant throughout the study whenever possible.
- Log sensor serial numbers — Record left and right serial numbers in the data dictionary linked to participant and session IDs.
- Use cross-calibration trials when sensors change — If a participant must switch to a different pair, record a short cross-calibration walking trial under controlled conditions.
- Charge and synchronize between sessions — Sensors should be charged and synchronized before every session. Do not carry over unsynchronized pairs.
- Document abnormal events — Drops, strong impacts, unusual heating, water exposure, failed uploads, visible damage, or repeated error states should be recorded in the study log.
4. Ecological Validity Considerations
The protocol should match the research question. If the study aims to understand natural outdoor movement, avoid over-controlling participants with treadmill-like constraints. Standardize the key factors that matter for interpretation and document the remaining real-world variation as covariates.
BEYOND is designed for outdoor daylight use, so session timing and lighting conditions should be planned accordingly. For public-space, team, clinical, or research data collection, prepare a brief participant information sheet and consent record before recording starts.
